M5 v Herne Bay – 10th February 2018

Old Bordenian 5 th X1 – 2
Herne Bay – 1

The 5ths played host to one of the strongest teams in the league on Saturday, once again in
appalling conditions. A new formation was put in place for this match based upon the earlier away
fixture, so a much more defensive set-up was tried. However, apart from a couple of nice moves, it
was the home side that dominated the first 15 minutes of the match and were 2 up. Fine work in
midfield by Rob Short, Collum Stevens, Finn Byrne, combined with the guile of Craig Williams and the
pace of Cieren Higgins, was causing the Bay side some problems. Stevens finished off a good move
involving Short, Byrne & Williams and then Williams benefited from some Higgins pace and
awareness to slot home. There should have been a third but Williams was unable to convert a great
chance.
The visitors did then start to have a lot more of the ball but the new formation of four at the back
with Pat Ruane marshalling and James Anderson in fine form in goal kept thwarting the opposition.
The second half saw the 5ths struggle to find their rhythm as Bay pressed forward in search of a
goal, which duly arrived from a far post finish. This galvanised the home side and they started to find
their passes to frustrate the visitors and they held on to a much needed victory.
