M3 v Sutton Valence – 26th January 2019

Sutton Valence – 5

Old Bordenian 3rd X1 – 1

Old Boys travelled to league leaders Sutton Valence on the back of what was not only a disappointing result but also a disappointing performance the previous week, determined to make amends. Things did not start well when, due to illness, OBs found themselves with the bare eleven players. However, Old Boys were not deterred and got stuck in from the first whistle, looking like a completely different team from the previous week. High pressing and plenty of pressure on the opposition was clearly working and Old Boys could sense the frustration showing amongst the Valence players. Although Old Boys were unlucky to concede a goal twenty minutes into the game, and were again unfortunate not to score after some good work from Gary Pointer in the box, who floated a cross over the onrushing ‘keeper, which was crying out for someone to get a touch on but instead bypassed everyone.
Half-time came which led to a rousing team talk from captain Craig Stone. The second half followed much the same pattern as the first, with really good pressure and commitment from every one of the eleven players on the pitch. However, before long, the fact that Old Boys only had those eleven started to tell, with some very tired legs and tired passes evident. This led to Valence taking a 5-0 lead into the final ten minutes of the game. After conceding the fifth, Old Boys pushed forward and it was from an excellent injected pass into the D from Rob Sage that Craig Stone managed to divert the ball into the bottom corner of the goal.
Old Boys finished the game on the end of a 5-1 loss but there were plenty of positives to take from it into next week’s home game against second in the league, New Beccs.
