M3 v Ashford – 16th March 2019

Old Bordenian 3rd X1 – 5

Ashford – 2

The third eleven were looking for an improved performance this week against Ashford after suffering back to back heavy defeats. Ashford started positively but lacked composure when confronted with scoring opportunities as they twice shot well wide when well positioned. Gradually the Old Boys started to take control of the game and scored a goal in the first half when Rowan Boddy touched the ball past the defender, allowing Matt Cooke to run on to the ball and found the unmarked Craig Stone at the back post who deflected the ball into the goal. Old Boys made it 2-0 shortly after, when a short corner was saved only to see Dave Philp volley the rebound into the net. Ashford regrouped but were denied twice by ‘keeper Craig Mulder. Five minutes into the second half, Ashford scored. Old Boys restored the two goal lead when another short corner was saved only for Craig Stone to pounce on the rebound and slotted the ball past the ‘keeper. Gary Pointer then played a wonder pass through to Luke Williams who slipped the ball to Jacob Burch, now one on one with the keeper, and, just as he was about to shoot, had his stick hacked from behind, resulting in a penalty flick which was coolly dispatched by Richard Phillips. Ashford were able to pull a goal back to make the score 4-2 before three of their players received cards. With five minutes left, Gary Pointer completed his hat-trick. With the game coming to a close, there was just time for Rich Phillips to add his second of the game to make it 5-2 and bring himself to just a goal behind Craig Stone in the top-scorer race.
