L1 v Kings Alleyn – 23rd March 2019

Kings & Alleyns – 1
Old Bordenian Ladies 1 st X1 – 2

OBHC travelled to King’s Alleyns for the last game of the season, full of confidence after a fantastic win the week before and on the back of knowing that they have played some great hockey in the second half of the season. With a number of key players unable to play, OBs tested a new formation, showcasing the flexibility and adaptability of those not playing in their regular positions. The game started fast paced with both teams pushing forward, looking to win the game. Kings’ approach was to crash ball to the forward line whilst OBs continued their style of hockey, building the play from defence, through midfield and onto the forwards. Both teams created a number of half chances with OBs’ keeper, Beth Locke, being kept busy making some good saves.
At halftime, with the score 0-0, the team talk was to change the formation once again and bring Nicole Ward into midfield to use her creativity to beat the Kings heavily loaded midfield press. Once OBs adapted to the change the expected space was created. Becky Elgar produced the pass of the game to find Lesley Wilson on the edge of the D who smoothly passed it onto Jen Stephen whose skill took her past two defenders and she coolly scored OBs’ first goal. This gave OBs the confidence to continue with the new game plan and, shortly after, another well worked team goal was finished by a strong strike from player/coach Zoe Golding. Kings continued to pressure the OBs’ goal through open play and also short corners. Unfortunately they scored through a messy goal mouth scramble in the final minute of the game. OBs saw the remainder of the game out, the final score being 2-1 to OBs.
