M5 v Anchorians – 29th February 2020

Gillingham Anchorians 4th XI – 1

Old Bordenians Men’s 5XI  – 7

OBs Men’s 5th XI made the trip to Gillingham, to play Gillingham Anchorians Mens 4th XI. The visitors went into the game sitting second in the table, four points behind Sutton Valence, knowing that a win and other results going their way, would see them guarantee a second place finish.

OBs were quickly into their stride, playing some really good hockey and dominating the early exchanges, creating a number of good opportunities in the process. Despite a few forays into their half, the visitors defence was largely untroubled, and following a series of short corners, they took advantage of one to take the lead, courtesy of Dave Crompton. Further goals followed from Neil Willis (2), both from well worked short corner routines, and Paul Ross Gower, whose goal came following some excellent work from Lewis Shaw. This concluded the scoring for the half and saw the teams go in to the break with OBs leading by four goals to nil. The last scoring action of the game took place in a 10-15 minute period after the break, with the hosts pulling a goal back and the visitors responding with three goals, all courtesy of Paul Ross Gower. With both sides looking dangerous on the break, it was a surprise that there was no further scoring and the only incident of note was a short break for both sides to seek refuge from a hailstorm.

The victory for OBs, coupled with other results going in their favour, saw them guarantee a second place finish. With Sutton Valence also winning, the status quo was maintained at the top of the table, however OBHC have an opportunity to close the gap when they visit Sutton Valence next weekend.
